New Haven a Leader in Community Tennis - QuickStart Courts
Dear Yale Friends & Colleagues, I am proud to tell you that New Haven has once again taken the lead to provide quality tennis to the community. Thanks to the very unique partnership and project support from the City of New Haven & its Board of Aldermen, New Haven Department of Parks Recreation and Trees, The United States Tennis Association, USTA New England and Pilot Pen Tennis, the tennis courts at East Shore Park and Edgewood Park have just received a much needed facelift and now boast the now familiar US OPEN Blue court (see attached beautiful photos!)
East Shore Park has become one of just FIVE public facilities in the country to offer permanent 36’ QuickStart courts for youth play. East Shore also boasts 7 full-size courts which also have 60’ QuickStart court lines painted on them. Quickstart is an exciting new play format for learning tennis, designed to bring kids into the game by utilizing specialized equipment, shorter court dimensions, all tailored to age and size.
Edgewood Park has been resurfaced repairing the nearly quarter mile of cracking. Edgewood also boasts QuickStart lines on the back four courts.
Both park sites are used to provide low cost - high quality tennis opportunities for hundreds of children and youth from the New Haven community annually. The courts also are the home sites for two of New Haven’s three High School tennis programs – Career and Hillhouse.
Hinding Tennis Construction resurfaced both locations and as they are finishing their last coat of paint and striping of the lines at both facilities, preparations are already being made for a Halloween tennis tournament at Edgewood bringing together both the young and old to celebrate a new era in New Haven tennis. With tennis participation on the rise these two resurfaced facilities will help to ensure that tennis participation will continue to increase for years to come.
